The world as we know it - 2,010. The credit crisis has struck, harder than ever before, and despite the governments' best efforts, nothing seems to work. Global crisis is imminent. Smaller companies topple, larger companies get funded by the government, which is running out of money, fast. In return, the companies, consolidating into ever bigger conglomerates, or so-called "Megacorps" support the government... but to little avail.

The world of now - 2,060. On 9/11, 2,051, exactly 50 years after "the other attack", terrorists struck again. In a coordinated attack, much more sophisticated than those of 50 years ago, they managed to detonate several EMP devices across the globe, knocking out the entire internet. Economies crumble, governments fell as the whole "west" is reduced to a third-world country overnight. Now, a few years later, it crawled back on its feet. Sort of.  

The government is a mere sock puppet of the Megacorps. In the San Fransisco sprawl, people fight for survival. The difference between rich and poor, the haves and the have-nots, is greater than ever before. Technology is booming, but down the street people are starving in what is basically a slum.
